Being healthy in college is difficult, but it is not impossible. There are a lot of things you can do to stay on top of your health in college. This post is about eating healthy, which of course, will keep you happy!

Perhaps the most important aspect of health is eating habits. If you follow all the other tips that I give in the next few weeks, but you do not eat healthy, whole foods, then your quest to be physically healthy may not go to well. Here are 5 tips to help you get going on eating healthy while in college:

1) Drink a lot of water...

Pretty simple, but this is the most important part of health! Take water everywhere you go—to class, to study, and to work. Drink a glass when you get up in the morning and before you go to bed at night.

2)   Eat breakfast…

I sometimes do not follow this advice, but everyone says to do it, and I feel a million times better when I do, so definitely try to eat breakfast as often as possible. It gives you energy so you can concentrate in your classes, and it is a relaxing and fun way to start your day.

 3)   Don’t keep bad snacks in your room!

Just do everything you can to stay away from bad snacks! Keep healthy snacks instead—nuts, fruit and granola bars are some suggestions. (I found a list here of amazing healthy snack ideas!).

4)   Maintain a variety in your diet…

That way you get a variety of nutrients in your diet!

5)   Eat fruits and veggies at every meal…

Sometimes this is impossible, but this will make a big difference in your overall health! Most of us do not get enough fruits and veggies in our diet, and making sure to get a serving of each at every meal is a good way to make sure you get the recommended daily dose.

Spiritual Growth in College

Spiritual Growth

Being healthy in college is difficult, but it is not impossible. There are lots of things you can do to stay on top of your health in college. This month I am going to be focusing on different aspects of health in college—eating healthy, exercising, and sleep. I am also going to talk about how to be healthy spiritually and relationally—how to protect your relationship with God and with your friends. All of these things are important to staying healthy in college.

To start out this series I am going to talk about spiritual growth. Why is spiritual growth so important? How are we to be good stewards of our souls and make sure that we are growing to know and love Christ more and more all the time?

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.                                       (Hebrews 12:1-2)

The New Testament consistently refers to the Christian life as a race. What do runners do to prepare for a marathon? They train their bodies to endure incredibly strenuous activity for long periods of time. This type of preparation doesn’t does not happen overnight. No one goes for one jog run around the neighborhood and decides they’re they are ready to run a marathon the next day. It takes months of training and preparation—consistently waking up every day and deciding to push their bodies to its the limit.

IMG 3017What is the result? Perhaps this would be easier to understand by looking at the people who do not properly train for marathons. It is not common, but about 1-2% percent of people who start a marathon do not finish the race. This could be because of exhaustion or an injury, both of which are preventable if you train properly. No one wants to be a part of that 1%. This is why marathon runners are so dedicated to their training.

Spiritually speaking, I want to be a marathon runner (running an actual marathon would be cool too, but we will see). I want my soul to be trained and prepared to endure trials and heartache. More importantly, I want to know Christ more and more every day.

How do we accomplish this? What are practical ways that we can strengthen our faith and depend on Christ more? I have found that these three things are the most helpful to me in my spiritual growth (training).

1)  Set aside time every day to study Scripture and pray in an environment free of distractions.

Having a quiet time is essential to spiritual growth; in fact, it should be the center of your spiritual life.

IMG 3012  2)   Recognize and fight sin and temptation.

This one is probably the hardest of the three, but we have to combat our sin in order to grow in Christ!

IMG 30073)   Stay focused on Jesus.

If we do not keep Him at the front and center of our lives, all of this is pointless. So whatever you are doing, whether it pertains to your spiritual life or not; whether you are training for the spiritual race or getting ready to run an actual marathon or just trying to make it to class on time, keep your eyes and heart on Jesus, and He will sustain and strengthen you.
