Dean Learning Center

Dallas Baptist University has been blessed with a beautiful campus. One of the features of University Hill is our buildings, many of which are modeled after traditional Colonial architecture. In the next couple weeks we are going to be highlighting a couple of our buildings on the DBU campus.

This week we are highlighting the Dr. William B. Dean Learning Center, our newest building on campus. It is located right across from the Pilgrim Chapel and right beside Horner Hall. Modeled after Harvard Hall, the Dean Learning Center provides the space and resources for several offices and campus organizations, as well as more classroom space for our students.

The main floor and second floor house the Service-Learning Program, Department of Online Education, College of Professional Studies, Career Development Center, Student Government Association, Office of Student Life, and Office of Student Retention.

On the bottom floor of the Learning Center is a student life center, named The Sellar, with a pool table, table hockey, and ping-pong tables, study areas, a kitchen area, and several flat screen TVs. This area provides a great space for late-night study sessions or just hanging out with friends.

Many students have already discovered this great addition to the DBU campus, and are enjoying the community and atmosphere that is being created here. From ping pong tournaments to discipleship and Bible study sessions, The Sellar is sure to be great hit among students for all kinds of events!

The modern decor and brightly colored furniture sets the casual atmosphere of The Sellar.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of the Dean Learning Center is the giant chessboard located just outside the building. The life-size pieces and large-scale board add a completely new dynamic to this traditional game of strategy. Having to view the game from such a different point of view demands a larger amount of focus and attention to detail, and the new twist on this classic game made playing the game a fun and interesting experience. It is certainly something I would recommend trying out, even if you are not a big fan of chess!

The DBU campus is constantly growing and expanding to make room for our growing number of students and the changing needs of the university, and everyone is so excited about this addition to our ever-growing campus. This is definitely an exciting time to be a student at Dallas Baptist University!

Snow Days at DBU

School is just about to start again at DBU, and we at DBU International couldn’t be more excited! We are especially excited about all of our brand new international students who will be arriving in a few days! We are in the middle of winter here at DBU, and so we want to use this blog post as a reminder to all international students, new or returning, to make sure you bring winter clothes (hats, scarves, gloves, and a warm coat) with you, or you plan to buy them when you arrive.

Winter in Dallas is usually mild enough that snow is not a constant occurrence, but we do get snow a few times during the season. DBU students enjoy making the most of the snow that we get, and snow days at DBU are the best! We have so many great hills for sledding, and we always count on having a great time. However, it is very important to prepare for snow days by having proper clothing. No one wants to wait until the snow has already fallen and the roads are closed to realize they do not have a snow day-worthy coat, hat, scarf, or pair of boots and gloves. If you live in an area that never gets snow it may be difficult to know what kind of stuff to buy, so DBU International’s amazing photographer Alli took some photos of some snow-day wear so you would have an idea of what to buy before the snow comes!

Things like a warm sweater and hat are a great place to start when looking for good winter clothes!

Sturdy boots and a flannel shirt are also important for DBU snow days!

Do not forget to bring an umbrella and rain jacket for rainy days! A travel mug is a great way to stay warm and hydrated as it gets cold outside.

Perhaps the most important items to remember when packing for the cold winter months at DBU are a mug for a hot coffee and a good book to curl up with after a long, cold winter day.

Here at DBU we are excitedly anticipating the arrival of all our International students, both new and returning. We hope you are having a great winter break, and we look forward to seeing you in a couple weeks!
