Esther Sun is a graduate student at DBU from China, and this week we had the opportunity to sit down with her and hear about her journey to DBU and her experience here!

How did you hear about DBU?

“Before I came to DBU I was working in China, and I was applying to graduate schools there, but everywhere I went the doors just seemed to close. Because of this I started looking at schools in the U.S. I came upon DBU’s website while looking at another school, and I decided to visit. When I saw the campus I just fell in love with it—it is so beautiful here! After that I was sure I wanted to go to DBU.”

Why did you choose DBU?

“It was clear to me almost immediately that DBU was the place for me. Sometimes in life you are given many choices and you have to decide which one is right for you, and sometimes you are given one thing and you just know it must be right—it is almost like the decision was made for you. That is how I felt about DBU. Every other door had closed, and when I discovered DBU I just knew that I was supposed to be here. It was so discouraging looking at schools in China and not finding one to attend, but I am so glad that none of those schools worked out for me, because otherwise I would not have ended up here. Through all of that I really learned to rely on God for everything.

“I went through a season after arriving at DBU when I was very discouraged and tired. I just wanted to give up. One day God gave me a word while I was writing in my journal, and I wrote it down: ‘Meet Jesus in the water.’ That night I went to a Shane and Shane concert in the chapel, and I heard the message about Peter walking on the water to meet Jesus. I could not stop crying because I knew God was confirming what I had heard earlier that day. All through my season at DBU this truth has stayed with me and helped me through all of the exhaustion and stress of graduate school.”

What do you want to do next?

“My major is Global Leadership, and after finishing at DBU I want to go back to China and teach English as a second language. I will probably start my career teaching primary school, but eventually I am hoping to teach middle school.”

Moving to a new country to attend school is both exciting and intimidating. It takes courage to embark on such a big adventure, but, like Esther discovered, it can be so rewarding. Thanks for sharing your story, Esther, and we wish you all the best!
