We at DBU International are so excited to be starting a new semester! To kick off Spring 2016 we will be doing a new blog series highlighting some of our amazing faculty and staff members here at DBU. To start this series off I had a chance to sit down with Jay Harley, DBU’s Dean of Spiritual Life and Student Life. I was able to talk to Jay Harley about his job at DBU. Most students know him as the organizer/leader of our chapel services; however, his job entails much more than that.

How did you get to DBU?

“I’m originally from South Carolina, and I moved to Texas after graduating from Clemson University to attend Southwestern seminary. While I was in seminary I started doing some volunteer work at DBU helping out with discipleship groups for the athletic department. After graduating from seminary I was offered a job as the director of spiritual life, and since 2010 I have been the Dean of Spiritual Life.”

What do you do at DBU?

“I oversee student affairs and spiritual life areas, which is residence life, apartment life, the career center, the counseling center, chapel, BSM, Global Missions, and student activities.”

How do you envision DBU’s Christ-centered community continuing to grow as DBU grows and changes?

“That is a tough question, and it is something we at DBU are constantly thinking about. I think the biggest thing we can do practically is to have more ministries, student organizations, and discipleship opportunities. I think we need to have more student life activities as well to encourage community. One way we are encouraging this type of growth is through making more places on campus for students to study and hang out. Our new Learning Center is a great of example of this. Typically the students who are active and engaged in the DBU community are also the ones who excel academically. It is so important for students to make friends and get involved in the activities and events that are happening on campus.”

DBU students have been blessed with incredible professors and faculty members who love to serve, teach, lead, and point their students to Christ. Be on the look out for our next installment in blog series highlighting a few of these individuals, and if you see Jay Harley or any of our other faculty or staff, make sure to thank them for all they do for our university!
