Step 2: Apply for I-20 and Visa

Once you have been accepted, you will need to apply for the immigration documents required to apply for the F-1 Student visa. You may submit these documents with your original admissions file, or wait until after you are accepted. The following steps indicate the steps you will need to take to get the required documentation.

(If you do not need an F-1 visa, skip to step 3)

Request New I-20 (living outside of USA)

In order to request an F-1 Student I-20, submit the following documents to your counselor:

  1. Application for I-20 (click here to download form)
  2. Proof of Finances and Sponsor Affidavit - see application form for detials
  3. Copy of Passport
  4. Dependent Documents - only if you are requesting F-2 dependent I-20s
  5. Set up Shipping if you can't pick up the documents - only submit this if you have been accepted

Apply for Visa

You may apply for a visa 120 days before the start of your program. When you receive the I-20, you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Review your documents for accuracy
  2. Pay I-901 feewww.fmjfee.com
  3. Submit visa application DS-160 and schedule the visa interview - www.state.gov | Apply for Non-Immigrant Visa

Your admission packet will include instructions and tips on these steps. Please review all the documents because they will go over each of these in more detail.

Request Transfer I-20

If you are transferring from another US university and will be continuing with the same SEVIS number, please submit the above documents along with copies of your current immigration documents (passport, visa, and current I-20). Once your documents are approved, we will email you the acceptance letter. Please take this letter to your current DSO and request the transfer of the I-20.

Special Note: DBU will not accept terminated students except in cases that are beyond your control. If you are in terminated status, do not request your I-20 transferred to DBU. Talk with your admissions counselor about submitting an appeal for DBU to accept you in terminated status. Appeal must address:

    1. Reason you went out of status
    2. Date you went out of status
    3. How it was outside your control
